When a Tooth Extraction is a Necessary Solution

Sometimes a loss is a gain. That principle applies to a tooth extraction.

Often this simple procedure is necessary to prevent more serious oral health problems. An extraction is a routine treatment that can improve the health of your surrounding teeth and your gums.

Tooth Extraction

Common extractions and why they’re necessary

A tooth extraction is most often associated with your wisdom teeth. These back teeth are the last to develop as you age.

Your wisdom teeth can create unique challenges if they grow improperly.

  • They might not fully emerge, leaving a portion beneath your gum tissue.
  • They can become misaligned during growth.
  • They can crowd and impact your adjoining teeth if space is lacking in your jaw.

These or any related problems can require a wisdom teeth extraction.

You might also have other teeth extracted.

  • A tooth that’s broken or severely fractured
  • A tooth that has substantial decay and cannot be treated with a root canal
  • A tooth that’s impacted by advanced gum disease

Sure, it’s best that your tooth is saved. But on occasion a tooth can cause more harm, discomfort, and expense if it’s not extracted.

Common questions about a tooth extraction

Is a tooth extraction a complicated procedure?

An extraction is considered a simple oral surgery procedure. Wisdom teeth extractions are a bit more complex when the teeth are impacted. But generally, an extraction is a fast, easy procedure.

Will an extraction be painful?

The procedure is surgical. Most anticipated anxiety has to do with your expectations. For reassurance, It’s best to discuss the treatment and healing details with your dentist.

How long does a tooth extraction procedure last?

Your extraction typically requires a few minutes. Most of the time required involves allowing the anesthesia to take effect prior to the procedure.

What happens during the extraction?

Local anesthetic will be applied to your extraction area. After numbing, the tooth or teeth will be gently manipulated to make removal easier. Following the extraction the exposed tissue will be covered with gauze to promote healing.

What care is required following a tooth extraction?

Gentle biting on gauze is necessary for approximately 30 minutes after the procedure. After-care instructions will be provided and include the following:

  • Apply ice to your exterior jaw area if swelling occurs.
  • Avoid the extraction area when brushing or flossing during healing.
  • Gently rinse your mouth with water.
  • Use a prescribed antibiotic and/or pain reliever if necessary.
  • Avoid use of a straw or smoking for 24 hours after the procedure.
  • Modify your diet (with recommendations) for a few days as the extraction area heals.

Expect your mouth to begin feeling normal within one to two weeks following an extraction.

Keep in mind that an extraction is most often necessary when the problem tooth or teeth are affecting the health of your surrounding teeth and gums.
